As a startup founder, when should you trust your gut versus leaning on data versus age-old wisdom to make decisions? #decisionmaking
While there’s no one-size-fits-all answer, I’ve devised a framework that I’d like to share:
1.Recognize your areas of expertise as a founder and trust your intuition in these domains. Intuition extends beyond common sense; it’s a culmination of your experiences and knowledge, forming patterns in your subconscious that guide you effectively.
2.Identify areas where you lack experience, and refrain from relying on your intuition.
3.Data can be a potent tool when it directly pertains to your situation. However, exercise caution by filtering out ambiguity and applying only the relevant portions.
4.Cultivate a board of friends or fellow founders with whom you can discuss decisions openly. Seek individuals who won’t shy away from challenging your perspectives.
5.For pivotal decisions, systematically document your justifications. Writing them down is crucial, as human memory can be unreliable. This practice helps you gain insights into your thought processes and identify potential pitfalls over time.
The optimal approach is to combine data, intuition, and insights from analogous situations to make well-informed choices.
